Chapter Ten

Water Dragons

Cornelius sat with his back against one of the library windows, allowing the sun to penetrate its heat through his clothes. Latham approached him. “I need your help.”

Cornelius sat forward, laying the book he was holding on the table. “What is it, Your Highness?”

“What do you know about the water dragons?”

Cornelius shrugged. “Not much. They did not come with King Adrian and his people to the Draconem Lands we know so well. Hence, the books on them are very few, and all the images I have found of the bondings do not depict a single water dragon.”

“Are you saying humans cannot bond with them?”

“No, it just, to my knowledge, hasn’t been done.” He walked over to a line of books that looked beaten down with age, with spines losing their binding and pages shrivelling inward. “These are the oldest books you will find on the dragons. Most are hardly legible. But, if you want to know about water dragons, these are probably your best bet.”

Latham pulled one of the books from the shelf. He turned the pages slowly.

“Why the sudden interest in the water dragons?”

“I was saved by one yesterday. The dark magic unleashed in the storm somehow had taken a physical form and latched onto me. It pulled me into the water. I was already drowning when the water dragon appeared. He rose up with me on his back. You hadn’t heard?”

Cornelius shook his head. Usually, he was on the up and up, but the extensive Draconem library and his family affairs had been a heavy distraction.

Latham stopped at a page with a painting of a blue and green dragon.

The water dragons still will not let us bond with them, it read. I have spent many days watching them, and they do not seem so different from those we have already bonded with. They fly and can live on land just as well as the water, though they prefer the water no matter how shallow. It seems they rely on it as a way to recharge.

The fire dragons do not usually mingle with them. I have seen them fight, and the water dragon almost always wins, for they can breathe water either hot as lava or cold as ice. Needless to say, they have the advantage. They never start the fights, though. They are peaceful and gentle. Never has one growled at me like the land dragons often did before they came to trust me.

Yet, despite this, they will not connect with us. I do not know if it is because we are on land and they prefer water, but they seem entirely disinterested in our kind.

Latham sat by the rippling stream, feet submerged, letting the spray from the waterfall touch his face. He tapped the cool surface with the tip of his finger. Leaning so that his lips were close enough to drink it, he called, “Come up.”

The sand beneath his toes folded and unfolded. The rocks under his feet shook. He could feel the vibrations, and he welcomed them.
